Recollection Volume 14 – Wanna Be Your Friend: A Tribute to the Inbreds

Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly by computron. Today computron chooses…  Album: Wanna Be Your Friend: A Tribute to the Inbreds Artist: Various Artists Released: 2007 Format(s) I own it on: CD The Inbreds. I’m a big fan of The Inbreds, they didn’t always stick to their schtick of bass and drum, but even when they did, they succeeded in making interesting melodic pop that almost defies their instrumental limitations. That skill at crafting amazing melodies is what makes The Inbreds so spectacular. Mike O’Neill and Dave Ulrich deserve every accolade… Read More »Recollection Volume 14 – Wanna Be Your Friend: A Tribute to the Inbreds

Chester Station second exit

I am so happy I’m not an elected official. I went to the TTC’s meeting about the second exit for Chester Station. My councillor attended and she tweeted this just a moment ago. Since I don’t seek public office I can tell you the truth. What Councillor Fragedakis tweeted can be summed up as such… LIES! That was not a “good discussion.” The angry man who interrupted the session to proclaim that the TTC would have to buy his house if they wanted to put elevators at the main exit of Chester Station was not a good discussion. The man who decided to deride the TTC staff for calling the… Read More »Chester Station second exit

Recollection Volume 13 – The Tragic Treasury: Songs from A Series of Unfortunate Events

Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly by computron. Today computron chooses…  Album: The Tragic Treasury: Songs from A Series of Unfortunate Events Artist: The Gothic Archies Released: 2006 Format(s) I own it on: CD We are the Gothic Archies, death, tentacles, and pip. Took longer than I expected to get to a Stephin Merritt project. The Gothic Archies is Merritt’s project of depressing bubblegum pop. The Tragic Treasury is a collection of songs created by The Gothic Archies for the young adult novels A Series of Unfortunate Events. Each audio book in… Read More »Recollection Volume 13 – The Tragic Treasury: Songs from A Series of Unfortunate Events

Doctor Who Serial 054 – Inferno

Synopsis: The Doctor is consulting on a massive drilling project allowing him to syphon off energy to use on his TARDIS console. People start dying. So apparently The Doctor is keeping the TARDIS console in a garage, and using a sonic screwdriver as a garage door opener. Meanwhile, once again we have a science project happening where the lead is an arrogant asshole who won’t listen to reason or take responsible safety precautions. While Sir Keith, the funder is trying to bring in consultants to ensure safety and responsibility. Showing its British class-structure. The Doctor flies the TARDIS console into a parallel universe, where an evil Brigade Leader Lethbridge-Stewart is… Read More »Doctor Who Serial 054 – Inferno

Doctor Who Serial 053 – The Ambassadors of Death

Synopsis: A space mission is sent to rescue a ship that hasn’t been responding. Something goes wrong and Earth loses contact with the space probe. Aliens send down some ambassadors while some secret agencies are working in secret. UNIT is advising the Space Command, while The Doctor and Liz Shaw are watching on TV. It’s weird to see The Doctor observing a big event on television. It’s not his thing. It makes me think The Doctor must be in misery due to his exile, but they don’t portray that. Instead The Doctor is just tinkering away in his TARDIS trying to override the lockouts that the Time Lords put on… Read More »Doctor Who Serial 053 – The Ambassadors of Death

Recollection Volume 12 – Rock of Ages

Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly by computron. Today computron chooses…  Album: Rock of Ages Artist: The Band Released: 1972 Format(s) I own it on: Vinyl I’ve owned this record on vinyl for a long time… a long, long time, and never really listened to it. I like The Band, I swear, I’m just not a huge fan. Never loved them. I also don’t really like live albums. That being said, Rock of Ages is damn good! When I first started writing this, I didn’t realize that there was an inconsistency between what was on… Read More »Recollection Volume 12 – Rock of Ages

Onion Paywall version 2.0

It seems 99% of the visitors to my blog are looking for ways to get around the Onion paywall. I posted about it a while ago in this post. Turns out it has changed. Here’s the updated instructions… Once AdBlock is installed, click on the Adblock icon and choose Options. Click Customize, and click edit beside the manual section. Paste the following in and save. theonion.com##div[style*=”background-image”][style*=”width: 100%”] ##img[src=”http://s.ppjol.net/static/fb/fancy_close.png”] ##a[id=”gregbox-signInTab”] ##div[id=”gregbox-outer”] www.theonion.com##IFRAME[id=”ppUI”][src=”https://ui.ppjol.com/lightbox/lightbox_ui.html?start”] www.theonion.com##DIV[id=”pressplusOverlay”] This also resolves an issue I had with Tumblr and “background-image” where it would prevent your browser from rendering Tumblr correctly.

Today computron chooses…  Album: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie – Music from the Movie and More… Artist: Various Artists Released: 2004 Format(s) I own it on: CD Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Spongebob Squarepants, of course. For the purpose of stats, I will count this record as male and American, as the vast majority of the contents are both. Sorry Avril. I should also state for the record, that this was a promo disc. The album starts off with a cover of the theme… Read More »Recollection Volume 11 – The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie – Music from the Movie and More…

Doctor Who Serial 052 – Doctor Who and the Silurians

Synopsis: UNIT is called to a nuclear power station which is losing power. They find Silurians are waking up, a biped lizard people from Earth’s past. This is a very interesting episode, mostly because The Doctor is convinced the Silurian people and the Humans can coexist on Earth together. UNIT however is reacting militarily, and some scientists from the power station just don’t believe they exist. The problem is that the story is seven episodes long. It takes forever for anything interesting to happen, and by forever, I mean three episodes. The first three episodes plod along without creating any interest for the viewer. This is why it has been… Read More »Doctor Who Serial 052 – Doctor Who and the Silurians

Recollection Volume 10 – Expressions

Recollection is a project to review my record collection. I will listen to an album I own and review it. The album will be chosen randomly by computron. Today computron chooses…  Album: Expressions Artist: Music Go Music Released: 2009 Format(s) I own it on: Vinyl At some point Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney/Wild Flag/Portlandia fame tweeted about a band called Music Go Music. I listened to the song, and bought the album on vinyl. The record was pieced together from three different EPs, but works pretty well as an album. The album is a cross between Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and Abba. It’s addictive and fun, but didn’t seem to stay much in rotation. I… Read More »Recollection Volume 10 – Expressions
